In the kitchen, Spilanthes adds a refreshing zing to any cocktail, appetizer, or entree. In culinary circles, it is also known as Lemon Drop or Szchezuan Button.
All parts of spilanthes have medicinal properties, including the root, stem, leaf, young flower bud, and flower. Spilanthes has an immune enhancing effect which is useful in the beginning-phase of infections (viral and bacterial), including earaches and colds. The plant contains alkylamides – natural bioactive compounds that fight inflammation and microbes. It also makes your mouth tingle and has a sialagogic effect, which means it encourages salivary flow. It is known as the “toothache plant” for its ability in treating various dental woes, including swelling, gum diseases, decay, and mouth sores.
Spilanthes can be made into tea, tincture, topical ointment, a bug repellent… so many options!
